The Internet is Changing (and not in a good way)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I started this website because I didn't like how corporate the internet had become. It seemed like everyting was about the core web and the only places everyone went to needed some sort of login. I wanted to create a place that would change that, somewhere that anyone could read and checkout things just by typing in the URL. Unfortunatley, it seems like the powers that be want to strip away anonymity completly and make sure that they can identify anyone online.

I really don't like this for a variety of reasons, but mainly because being anonymous is what made the internet what is today. I'm still under the idea that your internet self and your IRL self are supposed to be seperate, both for safty reasons and because sometimes you don't want others to know what you do online. I do not want my family members to freakout that I'm not religous and actively think the idea of religion is counterproductive and bad for kids because of the judgment and attempts to "save me" that will happen if they did find out. I do not want my job to see me acting vulgar online because I was playing some COD Zombies online and I swore heavily becuase I went down after getting caught on the teleporter. Just like how we have our different faces with out family, friends, and partners, we should have that same freedom online and not have to feel like we need to limit ourselfs because of what someone who isn't there might think of they saw.

I also hate just how much internet companies have changed things like speech. I've wanted to talk about this for a while, but I think it's weird that more people censor themselves online than before. Not just in not saying words like "fuck" or "shit", but some people won't even say words like "rape", "kill", "gun", or even "sex" without feeling they're in violation of some digital Hays Code. Like I hear these words more on TV and the radio more than I do online at this point. This was the opposite just 10 years ago, and the fact that we changed just for the chance of "views" or "monetization" without any real evidence that saying these words impacts that is just bazaar to me.

I don't know how this will play out, but we must not let then control the internet like they want to. I will not show anyone my ID online, I will not let this site be inaccessible to others becuase of what I might say or do on here, and if they try to limit what I can access then I guess I'll just avoid the site at best or steal everything I can at worst. I've been downloading my videos from YouTube, I've gotten songs from Spotify, and I've been bulking up my physical media library. I don't care what they want, they won't get more information on me than they already have. I encourage you to do the same, hell even learn how to transmit your own radio and TV signals if you wish. If things get worse, that might be the only way to speak freely anymore.
